If you own a dog in Cayman, it is helpful to know what you can do and where you can go with your dog! Below you will find a list of dog ownership rules, veterinary clinics on island, dog-friendly restaurants and more.

Dog Ownership Rules in Cayman

The Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture (DOA) is the place to go for rules and regulations on dog ownership. In a nutshell these include…

  • All dogs over the age of 4 years must be licensed (licenses are free and can be obtained at DOA. Follow this link to learn more)
  • Dogs must be leashed at all times in public places and highways and wearing a collar with an ID tag
  • Dogs must be confined on property when not on lead, and not allowed to roam
  • All faeces must be picked up in public places
  • Dogs cannot be out of control where there is risk of that dog injuring a person or another domestic animal
  • Dogs that are kept contained must be in a suitably sized kennel or enclosure and must be exercised regularly

If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to report a case of cruelty you can contact the DOA at 934-3090 or email at agriculture@gov.ky or reportanimalcruelty@gov.ky. In cases of emergency or dangerous dogs you can contact 911 or the RCIPS. Head over to their website to download their Responsible Dog Ownership Brochure and check out more about the department.

It is also helpful to know that if you need to make a report anonymously you can contact Cayman Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS(8477).

Dog-Friendly Dining

If you have a dog that is comfortable around people and other dogs it is great to get them out of the house. Not only do you have to worry about getting back home to them, but they also get a ton of enrichment through meeting new people, smelling new smells, and experiencing new and exciting things. Make sure to keep an eye on our social media for posts featuring the below locations.

Please note that dogs are only allowed on patios in these establishments.

  • Macabuca: A classic dog-loving bar located in West Bay with one of the best views on the island. This bar has a ton of seating to move around but take note that people will be coming in and out of the water in scuba gear which may look a little funny to a dog. Note that if your dog is dog-selective that there are several free-roaming dogs in the area.
  • Vivo: Stunning dive spot in West Bay with a ton of healthy and delicious vegan options. It is a dive spot so there are people coming and going with dive gear. The patio is a bit smaller so just make sure your dog is well socialized if you are heading here.
  • Coccoloba: A beautiful Mexican joint located right on 7 mile and attached to a very dog-friendly hotel, The Kimpton. These guys are so dog friendly they even have a dog menu available to order some treats for your pooch. Note that there are some resident cats as well as a very good chance of seeing other dogs as it is right on the beach.
  • Dukes: Located where Fishbowl used to be near Public Beach on Seven Mile, this fun outdoor wine bar is very welcoming to everyone, including your 4-legged furry friend!
  • Driftwood Bar & Grill: Located in the Grand Caymanian Resort on Crighton Drive on the North Sound, these guys allow dogs on their spacious outdoor patio. They just ask that you come around the side and they will greet your 4-legged furry friend with a cool bowl of water and a treat. Bring a long leash and let your dog take a swim in the water right out front. It’s a win-win!
  • Lonestar: Located right on Seven Mile this outdoor sports bar is the perfect place to watch a game with your dog. Just be mindful of the noise on the crazier nights!
  • Waterfront/Mizu/Brooklyn: Located in Camana Bay and belonging to the Market Street group, these guys are notoriously dog-friendly. Waterfront is a great place to get your dog out for some breakfast after their morning walk. Enjoy some authentic Sushi on Mizu patio or some delicious pasta at Brooklyn for lunch or dinner while watching boats come and go. For any restaurants in Camana Bay I do advise that your dog is OK with children.
  • Gelato & Co.: Located in Camana Bay they have made special gelato just for dogs…I don’t need to say anything more here. For any restaurants in Camana Bay I do advise that your dog is OK with children.
  • Karoo/Abacus: Karoo has a great patio for dogs and the staff will always come to greet you with a dog bowl. It is one of the patio’s that has the most “action” in Camana Bay due to its location. If the hustle of Karoo is too much for your pooch head down to their sister restaurant, Abacus, which being further down the paseo tends to be a bit quieter. For any restaurants in Camana Bay I do advise that your dog is OK with children.
  • Jessie’s: Great place to grab some food and a coffee with your dog. Do note that you need to order inside so if you are by yourself this can prove to be difficult with a dog sometimes. Once you are settled your dog will get a ton of love from people passing by. For any restaurants in Camana Bay I do advise that your dog is OK with children.
  • Craft: Another Market Street gem that actually has dog stations where you can tie up your dog safely. Located right on Seven Mile Craft has a very dog-friendly patio with lots of umbrellas for shade.
  • The Bird: Located in Seven Mile Shops, the bird is a chill place to grab some food and sit outside on a shaded patio with your pooch.
  • Lazy Lizard and Bevvy: Located on seven mile at the old Margaritaville you’ve got the choice of two bars in one place. Lazy Lizard is the lower bar at the pool and Bevvy is up on the road level. Though a lot of people sit at the bar, Bevvy has a lot of seating around in the old Lobby area so there are a few options for seating depending on your pooch.
  • George Town Yacht Club: Bring your dog around the side by the gas station and sit on this beautiful patio and watch the boats come in and out. The staff love dogs here and their food is great!
  • Le Vele: Even though it is located on the second floor Le Vele welcomes dogs on their patio which is accessible by an outdoor staircase on the side of the building. You must try the pizza, one of the best on the island!
  • Rackams: Notoriously dog-friendly, this bar right on the water in George Town is always happy to welcome a dog. Do note that the dogs are only allowed by the bar, not in the dining area. If your dog is not overly excited about sharing their space with another dog just be mindful as there are two entrances to watch for other incoming dogs.
  • Waffle Monkey: Located just across the street from Rackams, grab a seat on their patio and enjoy a delicious waffle. They will be happy to bring your pooch some water and let them chill. If you have an excitable dog just be aware that Digicel is located next door so there are usually a number of people coming and going.
  • Bluestone Lane: A beautiful contained patio space right in the heart of George Town that is happy to welcome your furry friend through the side entrance in the back. There is usually a security guard that will be able to open the door for you if it is just you and your dog. It’s a great spot to take your dog for the afternoon and get some work done while enjoying delicious coffee and food.
  • Mike’s Bar/Salty’s: Located in Grand Harbour this location is ideal for social dogs. On most evenings and weekends you will find lots of kids, bikes, scooters and people so it may be a bit overwhelming for a shy dog.
  • Czech Inn Grill: One of my favourite spots on island to grab a bite and since the entire restaurant is outside you have no problem bringing your dog along. Just be aware there are some resident cats and some free-roaming dogs in and around the property.
  • Kaibo: The only place in Rum Point you can enjoy a bite to eat with your pooch. With lots of patio seating, umbrellas and water access it is an idea place to spend an afternoon either by land or boat!
  • Over The Edge: located in North Side right on the water this is a great place to stop in for a bite to eat to enjoy the view and a cold beer on tap. If your pooch is getting restless you can head down to the water with them to keep them entertained.
  • Tukka (East and West): Enjoy beautiful water views at both locations while enjoying delicious and fresh food.
  • Sunset House: located in South Sound this completely open restaurant has lots of space to hang out with your dog and enjoy the views of the water. With a massive menu, including some amazing Indian options this is a great place to grab a cold beer with your pooch.
  • Agua & Next Door : Located on the waterfront in Camana Bay, enjoy a delicious meal at Agua on their patio overlooking the Camana Bay Island, or grab a hand-crafted cocktail from their cocktail lounge next door. For any restaurants in Camana Bay I do advise that your dog is OK with children.
  • Pane & Pasta : Located in Camana Bay, this place always welcomes dogs with open arms on their completely shaded patio. With homemade pasta and delicious coffee and pastries, this is a great spot to stop for lunch or dinner with your pooch. For any restaurants in Camana Bay I do advise that your dog is OK with children.
  • Door No. 4: Located in The Grove, not only does this place have out-of-the-box amazing cocktails, their food is out of this world. Sit on their comfortable patio along the walkway of The Grove taking in the action of this new development.
  • Union: Located in Camana Bay, these guys pride themselves on being pet-friendly. Often hosting animal charity breakfasts to promote the adoption of dogs and puppies looking for their forever home, they are sure to be happy to have you and Fido in for a bite to eat on their waterfront patio. For any restaurants in Camana Bay I do advise that your dog is OK with children.
  • Bacaro: Located near the Cayman Islands Yacht Club, this is a place I always love bringing my foster puppies to. The staff is always welcoming and accepting of your 4-legged furry friend. With wine, cocktails, small bites, and an awesome menu Bacaro is a fantastic place to spend the afternoon or a weekday happy hour.
  • Morgans Seafood Restaurant: Also located near the Cayman Islands Yacht Club, you can sit outside with your pooch and watch the boats come in and out while you sip on some cocktails or wine and enjoy some fresh seafood.
  • The Edgy Vedge: Located in Camana Bay, this 100% vegan restaurant loves when you bring your pooch to enjoy some food out on their shaded patio.
  • Aria : Located in Harbour Walk, this beautiful Mediterranean-inspired restaurant has a beautiful patio located in the middle of Harbour Walk that is pooch friendly.
  • Allora: A sister restaurant to Aria, this beautiful cafe located across from Aria in Harbour Walk has a dog-friendly patio that is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Delicious baked goods, gelato, and pizzas…what more could you want?
  • The Hive: Located across from The Strand on 7 mile, The Hive is a cool and unique spot that offers not one, but THREE choices of food vendors to choose from including a vegan food truck. Sit outside with your pooch and enjoy one of their signature lemonades, you won’t regret it!

Animal Charities in Grand Cayman

C.A.R.E. – Cayman

C.A.R.E. is a spay and neuter initiative that aims to eradicate pet overpopulation in Cayman. They work with and in the community to assist people and their pets with free spay and neuter as well as preventative treatments where they can. C.A.R.E. also runs a kidsCARE program that has visited all schools in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac teaching about the 5 freedoms of animal welfare. They have created and distributed 3 issues of an animal welfare magazine called PetZone to the kids across the islands. They do not deal with re-homing or adoption, just strictly with owned pets and ferals.

The Cayman Islands Humane Society

Located beside ALT the CIHS is the only charity with a shelter location where you can go and view animals up for adoption. Don’t forget to ask them about the animals they have in foster homes! If you are not ready to adopt they are always looking for volunteers to help walk dogs, cuddle cats or assist in daily shelter cleaning needs.

Feline Friends

Feline Friends is the place to contact for feral cat communities needing spay & neuter services.

One Dog At A Time

As the name suggests, this charity works on rehoming dogs both on and off island. Dogs that owners can no longer care for, or are left at the Department of Agriculture, ODAAT will find them a foster home and provide medical care as well as sterilization. Another foster based charity you will have to reach out to them to see what dogs they currently have up for adoption.
